Hazel Leys Academy

Brake Competition

Alex Muir, Year 6 from last year, managed to beat thousands of children from across the UK to be named Brake's road safety poster winner for Key Stage 2.
Alex impressed the judges with her '20 is Plenty' design. This has been made into two large professional banners. One is now displayed at the Academy. The other will be displayed in Corby. Alex has also won hundreds-of-pounds worth of prizes, including a brand-new bike and helmet donated by Halfords, a £100 Hobbycraft hamper, plus £100 of Co-operative Food Store vouchers that are being spent on treats for the whole school. The fire station may also be welcoming Alex for a special visit.
Alex was among nearly 7.000 children aged 4-11, from 500 schools who entered the national competition, sponsored by Co-op Insurance and supported by the national Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) and National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC). Alex was presented with her award in a special assembly with representitives for the sponsors, local police, fire and Corby Council. Alex was presented with her prizes by Brake mascot Zak the Zebra.
The project, which included free resources for teachers, aimed to inspire and engage children about the need for drivers to slow down so children can walk and cycle to school safely. It challenged children to create a poster about the dangers of adults speeding - something that puts lives at risk every single day.
One winner and two highly commended entries were chosen in two age groups - Key Stage 1 (4-7), and Key Stage 2 (7-11).
Mrs Bain, Principal, was delighted that Alex had won the competition as Alex had always been a star pupil and the prize was well deserved.
